Colour of the Year: Ultra Violet

Evoking not only originality and imaginative thinking, Ultra Violet has long been associated with mindfulness.

Colour authority Pantone® has selected dramatic and thoughtful Ultra Violet as the 2018 Colour of the Year. Evoking not only originality and imaginative thinking, Ultra Violet has long been associated with mindfulness, something that has become highly coveted in today’s chaotic environment. While it is often difficult for brands to use bold colours outside of their defined graphic elements, shades of Ultra Violet are now being applied more frequently in packaging and graphic design by forward-thinking brands in the CPG, luxury, and beauty industries. When used in conjunction with softer, more neutral tones, bold hues can provide an eye-catching splash of colour that sets your brand apart from others.

Forward Typography

Selecting the right font, size, boldness, and spacing is key. As we move into 2018, we expect to see bigger and bolder fonts.

Typography is an element of design that has always been important. Selecting the right font, size, boldness, and spacing is key. As we move into 2018, we expect to see bigger and bolder fonts.

Boldly creative typography is sure to be a standout once again. In this case, a designer’s imagination can go wild. This technique can be used effectively by combining the type with other design elements or can be used alone.

Cropped typography refers to the art of erasing fragments of letters while still maintaining the readability of the messaging. It requires a keen sense of creativity and expertise, but if done well, the result is truly eye-catching.

Chaotic typography is another trend that will take off this year. The idea behind chaos, is to move away from linear alignment of text in favour of a more unconventional order of letters and words.

Say it with Colour

With the infinite amount of content that consumers take in every day, it is no easy task for brands to stand out and get their message across to their audiences.

With the infinite amount of content that consumers take in every day, it is no easy task for brands to stand out and get their message across to their audiences. The use of bold and audacious colours is one graphic design technique that we are seeing used to help content become more prominent within consumers’ ever-expanding social feeds. The tricky part with using these types of elements is to be sure to choose colour combinations that work well together and create an eye-catching image.

One example that is being used more and more is to select a background colour that is in the same colour family as the product that is being advertised. This creates volume and a 3-dimensional effect that makes the product “pop”!

Hand-Drawn Detail

In stark contrast, we are now seeing a more human side of design emerge in hand-drawn illustrations.

In that last several years, geometric elements have saturated the design world. In stark contrast, we are now seeing a more human side of design emerge in hand-drawn illustrations. Not only are these illustrations taking the place of photography, but fonts are being hand-drawn as well, giving design a more natural and organic look and feel.

With custom, hand-drawn illustrations, every design is a unique piece of art. With a corresponding rise in artisanal, hand-crafted commodities (as noted earlier in Luxe Living) it is no surprise that design and packaging are going in a similar direction to bring about a new level of authenticity and originality.
